Microsoft have made the beta versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 betas available for download effective immediately. The initial downloads are for MSDN and Technet subscribers, however others will also have access from Friday, 9 January (Pacific Time - USA/Canada).

In a statement, Microsoft advise the Windows 7 beta which will be downloadable from will be available to the first 2.5 million downloaders only. How long it will take to be downloaded by that many people is anyone's guess, however many thousands have already downloaded the beta illegally using file sharing applications.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Reviewers Guide:

Please note:
- There is a bug in this beta that can corrupt MP3 files on your PC, network or attached storage. It's very important that before using Windows 7 that you load the patch for this if you have MP3s:
- Due to everyone trying to get these betas at the same time, it seems Microsofts servers have been swamped, so you may not be able to download the beta immediately.
