Microsoft Office 2010 released to manufacturing (RTM)

Today it has been announced by Microsoft that the new Windows version of Office has been finalised for release. It will be available for download within 7 days for Technet and MSDN subscribers, and for Volume License customers with Software Assurance from 27 April.

The Windows version of Microsoft Office will be available in a number of versions including a cut-down ad supported edition aimed at home users (will be bundled with low end home PCs and laptops). There is also Office Web App - an online version of Office aimed to work in support of the desktop version when users are not at their primary computer. Office 2010 it is also coming to mobile handsets including the ground breaking new Windows Phone 7.

There are considerable enhancements across the product which improve user satisfaction and productivity. A key addition for those involved in leveraging social media are the Outlook Social Connectors for Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace. The speech recognition capabilities have also improved and basic translation feature is included for the first time.

Coming late in the year is a new edition of Microsoft Office for Mac (dubbed Microsoft Office 2011). This will the Entourage email client replaced with a much improved product in Outlook for Mac.

Announced side-by-side with Office 2010 is Office SharePoint 2010 - Microsoft's online collaboration and document sharing solution which continues to gain rapid acceptance amongst businesses globally.
