Microsoft have today announced Silverlight 5. Scott Guthrie made the announcement at Silverlight Firestarter keynote. You can stream the event here. The video is well worth viewing and includes some incredible demos of data visualisation and 3D animation. With the Silverlight 5 release Microsoft have brought across more functionality from WPF. News has been floating around various gadget blogs today regarding new Windows Phone 7 devices from Sony Ericsson. While it's been confirmed by Sony Ericsson that their focus for 2011 will be on Windows Phone 7 and Android, there have been no official announcements regarding WP7 handsets. The images are fairly self explanatory since they include apparent device specs. What is unusual and makes the specs more likely to be bogus are certain specs such dual-core 1.2ghz CPU in the Sony Ericsson Xper (read the entire post)...

Windows Phone 7 launching October 21 in New Zealand with Vodafone NZ and Telecom NZ?

It's 2.40am in New Zealand right now, but Microsoft have just made the official announcement of Windows Phone 7 in New York. The handsets I am expecting will come to New Zealand on October 21 are: Vodafone NZ - HTC 7 Trophy Telecom NZ (XT Network) - HTC HD 7 LG Optimus 7Q (Note: this handset will be released in NZ in November) If handsets do launch on 21 October, then due to time differences this makes New Zealand the first country in the world to receive Windows Phone 7 as per this post a few (read the entire post)...

In the last 2 hours Microsoft have quietly made available the update version of the Zune client software in anticipation of the release of Windows Phone 7 in a few hours.

This release is an update to the previous 4.2 and 4.x releases aimed at support the Zune HD and previous Zune MP3 media players. As mentioned last week Microsoft have launched a new Podcast - Windows Phone Radio. The first episode has been made available to listen to in the last few minutes.
